For the second year members of Microporous Products helped the American Chemical Society in their celebration of National Chemistry Week by providing an information and demonstration booth for the local section’s "Fourth Grader’s Day". Over a two day period a total of about 1300 fourth graders from around NE Tennessee and Virginia were introduced to The Chemistry of Batteries. The theme of this year’s festivities was "Your Home - It’s All Built on Chemistry". Hands-on exhibits were used to explain how the typical 9V and AA size batteries that are used everyday in the home are made and what these batteries actually look like on the inside. Such concepts as voltage and amperage were explained as well as how a battery can be used to make a magnet. Assembly kits were even given to each school and class so that they could actually put together a C size battery. Every group seemed to enjoy learning more about something they all use everyday and when asked why do batteries die-- it seemed to be pretty universal that they just "run-out-of-juice"!
