Several members of the company’s technical, marketing and human resources groups helped the American Chemical Society in their celebration of National Chemistry Week by providing an information and demonstration booth for the local section’s "Fourth Grader’s Day". Over a two day period a total of about 1300 fourth graders from around NE Tennessee and Virginia were shown the interesting and often curious chemistry of natural latex rubber. Since the theme of this year’s festivities was "The Joy of Toys" it was a perfect venue for the company to utilize its unique connection with natural latex rubber. Story boards and demonstrations were used to introduce the children to the fact that rubber comes from trees and that the chemistry that makes it usable for making such things such as toys comes from a process that the company uses everyday called vulcanization. Everyone seemed to have a good time and if even one youngster caught an itch to be a scientist or chemist it was well worth the time. Here are a few pictures for your viewing. The technical people are Matthew Hafner and Jamie Miller, our Human Resources person Steve Willis, and the marketing person is Matt Wilhjelm.
